If you've ever had to calculate the weight of concrete per cubic foot, this concrete weight calculator is just for you! Use it to see how much a specific volume of concrete would weigh, and enjoy how much easier your construction projects with concrete become!

🔎 If you're interested in building columns, our concrete column calculator will come in handy!

How to use the concrete weight calculator?

Our concrete weight calculator is very simple and intuitive to use. All you need to do is:

  • Select the concrete type from the first box in the calculator. You have five types to choose from: asphalt, gravel, Portland-Limestone, Portland, and reinforced concrete. To read more about limestone, check our limestone calculator. The reason for this is that these types of concrete have different densities. This influences the later calculation, as density is one of the factors that determine the weight of concrete.

  • Input the volume of concrete you need. Remember to choose a unit appropriate for your needs. You can choose to get the weight of concrete per cubic foot, cubic yard, or cubic meter.

  • Choose the unit you want in the density box. We have already provided the calculator with the appropriate densities to save you the trouble.

  • The concrete weight calculator will return the weight of concrete calculated from your provided data. Remember to check whether the units match here as well!

Concrete weight calculator formula and example

The formula used for calculating the weight of concrete is really simple. In fact, you most likely know it already, as it is the plain old equation for weight taught in schools! Just as a reminder, it goes as follows:

weight = volume × density

For clarity's sake, let's go through a quick example.

Let's say we have 15 cubic meters of Portland concrete. The density of this type of concrete in kilograms per cubic meter is 2,300, so the calculation goes as follows:

weight of concrete = 15 m³ × 2,300 kg/m³ = 34,500 kg

Types of concrete

This calculator offers you a choice between five different types of concrete. Here is some information on them:

  • Asphalt (density: 2,243 kg/m³ / 140.03 lb/ft³) – a composite material most commonly used for surfacing roads, airports, and the core of embankment dams. Commonly known as simply asphalt or blacktop, it is chosen for roads and streets because subject to traffic, it produces a lot less noise than other concretes.

  • Gravel (density: 2,404 kg/m³ / 150.01 lb/ft³) – gravel is actually an aggregate of concrete – it's not concrete per se, but it's often used as its integral part. It is formed of rocks of various sizes (in the case of concrete, typically tiny) not connected to each other.

  • Portland-Limestone (density: 2,371 kg/m³ / 148.02 lb/ft³) – made out of a specific kind of limestone first found on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, it is one of the most expensive kinds of cement, although still very popular in the building trade.

  • Portland (density: 2,300 kg/m³ / 143.58 lb/ft³) – one of the lowest-cost materials due to its wide availability.

  • Reinforced (density: 2,500 kg/m³ / 156.07 lb/ft³) – also called reinforced cement concrete or RCC for short, it's reinforced with an additional material (most commonly steel reinforcing bars) for ductility and durability.
